At the May 15 Naoko Takahashi Cup Gifu Seiryu Half Marathon, 2007 World Championships 10000 m bronze medalist Martin Mathathi (Kenya/Suzuki Hamamatsu AC) won in 1:00:47. 2011 World Championships marathon team leader and amateur runner Yuki Kawauchi (Saitama Pref.) ran 1:04:44 for 13th. Kawauchi ran among the leaders through 10 km but fell off pace after colliding with another athlete. "I had trouble moving my legs properly after that," he said. "Looking at my performance I'd have to say that I'm disappointed with a result like this, but it was good to get the feeling of racing again. I'd like to polish things up for the Sapporo International Half in July." Kawauchi then headed out to run hill repeats in the surrounding mountains.

Mao Kuroda (Team Yutaka Giken) won the women's half marathon in 1:13:45. Multiple Olympic and World Championships medalist Catherine Ndereba (Kenya) was 51 seconds back in 3rd.

In its first edition, this year's Gifu Half Marathon was dedicated as a charity fundraiser race for relief efforts in the disaster-hit northeast. Including the 3 km family run event, a total of 9000 people ran the race. A portion of each runner's entry fee went to disaster relief. The race also held a charity auction including goods signed by Sydney Olympics women's marathon gold medalist and former world record holder Naoko Takahashi. Giving advice to Kawauchi, who has been in the national spotlight since his remarkable run at February's Tokyo Marathon, Takahashi said, "Don't always think that you can do more than you can, and keep sight of who and what you are."

Chepkirui Wins Nagoya Women's Marathon

Heavy-duty favorite Sheila Chepkirui took the win at Sunday's Nagoya Women's Marathon , pulling away after 30 km to cruise in for 1st in 2:20:40. Erratic pacing early saw the first and second groups only seconds apart for much of the first half of the race, the top group slower than planned and the 2nd group a bit ahead of schedule. At halfway in 1:10:37 the front group included Chepkirui, #2-ranked Ruti Aga and last year's runner-up Eunice Chumba , and Japanese contingent Sayaka Sato , Rika Kaseda , Natsuki Omori and Mao Uesugi . Omori was the first to drop, then Uesugi, then Aga, who ultimately dropped out before 30 km. When the pacers stopped at 30 km Chepkirui made a move that dropped Kaseda and strung out Chumba and Sato behind her, but all four came back together once before another surge put Kaseda away for good. The Nagoya Women's Marathon , the world's largest women-only marathon and the last race in the selection cycle for September's Tokyo World Championships, happens Sunday. Weather conditions are looking better than what they had in Tokyo and Osaka the last two weekends, 7˚ at the start and rising to 12˚ with sunny skies. The wind looks a bit stronger than ideal, but it could be worse. 90% of National H.S. Ekiden Runner-Up Omuta H.S. Team to Transfer in Protest Over School's Treatment of Head Coach

A close 2nd at December's National High School Ekiden , 90% of the members of the five-time national champion Omuta H.S. team in Fukuoka will transfer to Tottori Johoku H.S. in Tottori at the start of the new school year next month. The mass transfer comes as a backlash against Omuta's treatment of head coach Ken Akaike , 52, with most team members and parents choosing to continue running under Akaike following his move to Johoku. Akaike had resigned as head coach at Omuta in March, 2023 after it came out that he had used corporal punishment on team members. But many team members at the time and their parents asked him to continue, and he returned to a coaching position at the school after undergoing training. Effectively serving as head coach, he led the team at last December's National High School Ekiden where they finished 2nd in a close-fought battle that went all the way to the end.
